Part 5: Create and animate objects on a slide — Patriotic Theme — Add Audio (music)

This step-by-step series of tutorials will show you how to animate shapes and text to create a customizable patriotic slide with background music. This fifth tutorial focuses on inserting audio (music) into the slide.

Insert Audio In this slide we’ve added patriotic music to play as background music. Here’s how to insert audio files using PowerPoint 2013.

  1. On the Insert tab,go to the Media Group and click on the More Arrow under the Audio Button. Choose Audio Online.

  2. When the Insert Audio Search Pane appears, type in Patriotic, and click the Search icon

  3. Choose Military Open > Insert

  4. The audio file will appear on your slide like this:

  5. Click and Drag the Speaker icon to move the file off of the slide like this:

  6. With the Audio File selected, Set it to Play in Background by going to Audio Tools in the Ribbon > Playback > Play in Background (this will change Start to Automatically)

  7. With the Audio file selected, go to the Animations tab in the Ribbon > Advanced Animation > Animation Pane to open the Animation Pane. You’ll find the Audio file animation at the bottom of the other Animation Effects.

  8. Select the file and drag it to the top of all the other Effects. Set it to Start with Previous.

This step-by-step series of tutorials will show you how to animate shapes and text to create a customizable patriotic slide with background music. This fourth tutorial focuses on drawing and animating the Star Columns shown below.

Create the shooting stars

  1.  Insert > Shapes > Stars and Banners > 5-Point Star

  2. Place the star on the slide then use your Guides (Right click on slide background, Choose Grids and Guides> Select Display grids on screen to create and intersection point for your “star columns”

  3. Use the Freeform tool to create star columns. You’ll find it at Insert > Shapes > Lines > Freeform [JM11](repeat until you have 4 columns of alternating colors)

  4.  Select the 5-Point Star. Go to Drawing Tools > Format > Arrange > Bring Forward (More Arrow) > Bring to Front 5. Select the 5-Point Star then holding down the Shift Key, select the Shapes you just drew with the Freeform Tool. 6. Group them by going to Drawing Tools > Format > Arrange > Group (More Arrow) > Group 7. Repeat Steps 1 – 6, but start each step with each 5-Point Star in your desired end location.

To animate the shooting stars, follow these steps:

  1. Select a grouped column then go to the Animation Tab and choose the Wipe Entrance Effect
  2. Click the Effects Options More Arrow ( to reveal options, then choose From Bottom)

  3. Repeat this step for each column, changing the Wipe direction depending on the a columns star location (e.g., you’ll want to animated the column with star located on the far left above From Right)
  4. With the Animation Pan open (Animation Tab > Advanced Animation Group > Animation Pane) set the timing for the shooting star animation to the follow settings (in the order in which you want the columns to appear:

    Start: With Previous Set the Delay: every 1:30 seconds Duration: .50

After creating and animating the Red Bars, White Stars, Text, and Shooting Stars, your Animation Pane should look like this:

*REMEMBER: We have labeled each object on the slide by identifying it in the Selection Pane (Home > Editing > Select > Selection Pane)

This step-by-step series of tutorials will show you how to animate shapes and text to create a customizable patriotic slide with background music. This third tutorial focuses on drawing and animating the Text shown below.

Create text
Learn how to animate the Text in the above slide — but with a twist. This tutorial will show you how to create Text using the PowerPoint Fragment Shapes feature and how to animate each letter with the Expand Entrance Effect

  1. On the Insert tab, click Text Box, and then place your cursor on the slide and click to draw the text box on the slide.

  2. Type the desired text (we’ve used Arial Black)

  3. On the Insert tab, insert a Rectangle Shape to cover the length and height of the text (shown in red – note that the color doesn’t matter at this point) > Send Rectangle Shape to Back (Right click on rectangle > Send to Back > Send to Back

  4. Select the Rectangle Shape then with Shift Key held down, select the Text Box

  5. Go to Drawing Tools > Format > Insert Shapes  Group > Merge Shapes ? > Fragment

  6. Delete the areas of the letters that need to be removed  (for example, the middles of the D, A, and R and the area of the shape surrounding the text. Leave the the remaining text.

  7. Change the Shape Fill and Shape Outline colors as Desired

  8. Adjust letter spacing as desired (we’ve tightened it up so each letter touches the next)

  9. Group all of the letters in “VETERANS DAY.” Select each letter while holding down the Shift Key. Then go to the Drawing Tools Tab > Format > Group ? > Group.

  10. Resize Grouped Shapes as needed
  11. Ungroup

To animate Text, follow these steps:

  1. Holding the shift key, select each text shape (important, select each shape in the order of which you wish to animate – we’re starting with the “V” and ending with the “Y”.

  2. Go to the Animation Tab > Advance Animation Group > Add Animation > More Entrance Animations > Under Subtle, pick Expand

  3. Show the Animation Pane by going to the Animation Tab > Advanced Animation Group > Animation Pane

  4. In the Animation Pane, with the animations effects still selected, go to Animation Tab > Timing  group> Start (More Arrow) > With Previous

    Set the Delay: Start each letter in 2 second increment (.20, .40, etc.)
    Set the Duration: .50

After creating and animating the Red Bars, White Stars and Text, your Animation Pane should look like the graphic below:

  1. Insert > Shapes > Stars and Banners > 5-Point Star

  2. Format the 5-Point Star with a White Fill and Red Shape Outline

  3. Place the star on top of the red bars like we’ve done here (we’ve duplicated the star three times for a total of four stars):

To animate the white stars, follow these steps:

  1. Select each star, then go to the Animations tab, Add Animation > Swivel (under Entrance)

  2. To set the timing for the animated stars, press and hold the Shift key, and select all four stars.
    In the Animation Pane, click the down arrow associated with the four stars.

This step-by-step series of tutorials will show you how to animate shapes and text to create a customizable patriotic slide with background music. This first tutorial focuses on drawing and animating the Red Bars shown below.

Create the red bars:
In this slide we’ve created two bars using rectangles and a gradient fill.

  1. To create the first rectangular bar, go to the Insert tab on the Ribbon> Shapes ▼  > Rectangle.Image 1 - Create Red Bars
  2. Draw the rectangle to the desired height and width (we’ve filled the bar with Red, used .4 inches for the 2. height and 11.82 inches for the length, and placethe bar near the bottom of the slide

  3.  Select  the bar, under Drawing Tools click the Format tab > > Shape Fill ▼ > Gradient > More Gradients

  4. In the Format Shape task pane, to set the gradient stops do the following:Create Rectangles - Image 4Type: Linear Angle:  180  Gradient stop 1:

    Gradient stop 2 (click on Gradient bar to add stop if needed):

  5. To close the Format Shape task pane, click the x in the upper right corner of the Pane. The rectangle will look like this:

  6. Select the rectangle, press Ctrl + C and then Ctrl +V. Now you have two rectangular bars.

Animate the red  bars:
*NOTE: We have labeled each object on the slide by identifying it in the Selection Pane (Home > Editing > Select > Selection Pane)

  1. Press and hold the Shift key, and then select each Rectangle
  2. To show the Animation Pane, click the Animations Tab > Advanced Animation Group > Animation Pane.Animate Rectangle - Image 1
  3. To apply an animation On the Animations Tab > Advanced Animation Group > Add Animation > More Entrance Effects> Expand

  4. To set the timing to animate both bars, click the down arrow ?next to ‘Rectangle’ (or Red Bar Top), click Timing, and then do the following: **Tip: Be sure that you press and hold the Shift key and select both bars so the timing applies to both.*** Set the Delay: 1.50 * Set the Duration: 03.00
